In 2006 The Santa Lucia River Club at Ballantrae underwent a major renovation, personally directed by Jack Nicklaus.
The par 72 championship course features practice facilities that include sand bunkers, putting and chipping greens as well as a double ended practice range. The practice tees feature Pas Palum grass for rapid re-generation and an excellent hitting surface.
The greens are undulating and challenging with Tif Eagle the grass of choice.
All on course tees are planted with Sea Isle Pas Palum.
During the renovation process the club installed new landscaping throughout the course, replaced cart path where required, added new bridges and bulkheading to enhance details and aesthetics.
The course opened to rave reviews from the members, the press and most importantly Jack. Since reopening the course has hosted the Gateway Tour, Gateway Collegiate Invitational, Florida Junior Tour, Golf Channel Tour and the Florida State Golf Association.
